How this mic test works
The test uses your browser's built-in Web Audio API. When you press start, the browser asks for permission to use your microphone and then feeds the live audio signal into a local analyzer. The green meter shows your current input level, the thin marker tracks your recent peak, and the waveform draws the raw signal — if any of them move when you speak, your microphone works.
The optional sound check records a short clip locally in your browser so you can hear yourself the way other people hear you on a call — the fastest way to catch a bad mic position, echo or background noise.
Frequently asked questions
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Nothing leaves your device — audio is analyzed locally and the optional sound check recording stays in your browser tab until you close it.
The meter does not move. What should I check?
First make sure the right microphone is selected in the dropdown. Then check your operating system input settings: the mic may be muted, its input volume may be at zero, or another app may have exclusive control of it. Laptop users: some laptops have a hardware mic-mute key (often F4) with a small LED.
My browser did not ask for permission.
You may have previously blocked microphone access for this site. Click the lock or camera icon in the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.
Why do I sound quiet or distant in the recording?
A low, distant sound usually means the wrong mic is selected (e.g. a webcam mic across the desk instead of your headset). Switch devices in the dropdown and record again — the difference is usually obvious.
