How this speaker test works
The tones are generated in your browser with the Web Audio API โ a 440 Hz sine wave routed to the left channel, the right channel, or both. Because the tone is generated digitally, anything wrong you hear (imbalance, rattle, distortion, a silent side) comes from your audio chain: the driver settings, the cable, or the speakers themselves. The sweep rises exponentially from 60 Hz to 14 kHz, covering the range that matters for music and speech.
Frequently asked questions
Left and right are swapped โ what does that mean?
If the LEFT test plays from your right side, your speakers are wired or placed on the wrong sides, or your headphones are on backwards. On desktop speakers, swap the cables or the speaker positions; some audio drivers also offer a channel-swap option.
One side is silent. Is the speaker broken?
First check the balance setting in your operating system sound options โ a balance pushed fully to one side mutes the other. On wired headphones, a half-inserted or dirty plug commonly kills one channel. If balance and cabling are fine, the driver on that side has likely failed.
What should the frequency sweep sound like?
A smooth tone rising from deep bass to a high whistle. Small speakers naturally start quiet at the low end. Listen for rattles or buzzing (loose or damaged driver), sudden dropouts, or distortion at particular frequencies.
I cannot hear the end of the sweep.
The sweep ends at 14 kHz. Hearing typically loses the highest frequencies with age, so an inaudible last second can be normal for adults even when the speakers are fine. If the sound cuts out much earlier, suspect the speakers.
