How this monitor test works

Each pixel on an LCD or OLED panel is made of red, green and blue subpixels. Filling the screen with a single pure color drives one set of subpixels at a time, so a subpixel that is dead (always off) or stuck (always on) stands out as a dot of the wrong color. The gray and gradient screens reveal problems a single color cannot: uneven backlighting, tinted patches and color banding.

What is the difference between a dead pixel and a stuck pixel?

A dead pixel receives no power and stays black β€” easiest to spot on the white screen. A stuck pixel is locked on one color and shows as a bright dot on the black screen or on the single-color screens. Stuck pixels sometimes recover; dead pixels usually do not.

How do I check for backlight bleed?

Use the black screen in a dark room at normal brightness. Glow along edges or in corners is backlight bleed. Some bleed is normal on LCD panels; large bright patches on a new monitor may justify a warranty claim.

What should I look for on the gray and gradient screens?

On 50% gray, look for patches that are brighter, darker or tinted β€” panel uniformity issues. On the gradients, look for visible stripes instead of a smooth ramp, which indicates color banding.

Can a stuck pixel be fixed?

Sometimes. Rapidly cycling colors over the pixel or applying gentle pressure with a soft cloth while the panel changes colors can revive a stuck pixel. Results vary, and pressure carries some risk β€” apply it sparingly.
